The events in Charlottesville are not an anomaly; they are happening all over America. In cities like Durham, Tampa and New Orleans, people are organizing to take down racist monuments. Symbols of white supremacy take different forms; for some it is a monument, for others it’s street name or campus building. For many it is an institution that continues to inflict harm on their people.
This week GGJ joins our ally organization Witness for Peace for a Week of Action for Berta Cáceres. Yesterday marked the 8th anniversary of the Honduran coup. Since then, violence in the country has increaced significantly, specifically towards activists, the defenders of land, justice and human rights.
In the wake of the violent tragedy on public transit in Portland, Oregon last Friday, Grassroots Global Justice Alliance supports OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon in calling on TriMet to demilitarize transit police, in favor of a community-defined, transit ambassador model which de-escalates crises, protects safety without deadly weapons, and provides resources for riders in need.
